WINNERS OF THE 5TH EDITION OF THE MIKE OKONKWO NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION EMERGE

An 18 years old student of Alimosho Senior Secondary School in Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State has emerge the overall best student in 5th edition of Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition out of over 260 entries that were received from students across the nation. Master Akinpelu was announced as the star winner with a total score of 70% after a keenly contested closely monitored essay competition for the best 18 candidates under the supervision of Dr. Daramola Adeyemi, the Chief Examiner a Senior Lecturer of the Department of English, University of Lagos and Pastor (Mrs.) Oluwayomi Uteh, Group Manger, Operations TREM at TREM Headquarters. He will be receiving the star prize of one Desktop Computer and a Printer worth N140,000.00 for his school and a cash prize of N75,000.00 for himself. Master Temiloluwa Wright of Baptist Academy, Lagos State came second with a total score of 67.5%, while. Master Uzoma Chukwudi of Dority International Secondary School, Abia State came third with a total score of 65%. The second best student will be receiving a Desktop Computer worth N75,000.00 for his school and cash prize of N50,000.00 for himself, while the third best student will be receiving books worth N40,000.00 for his school and a cash prize of N25,000.00 for himself.
The Mike Okonkwo Essay Competition was introduced as part of the activities to mark the Birthday Celebration of Bishop Mike Okonkwo and a way of improving the standard of education in the country and exposing the young people’s mind to issues that are of significant to nation building. The prizes will be presented to the winners at the 9th Mike Okonkwo Annual Lecture on Thursday, September 4, 2008 at the Shell Hall of the Muson Centre Onikan, Lagos by 9.30 am. The topic of the Annual Lecture which is the Role of Judiciary in Sustenance of Democracy and will be delivered by Prof. Ilochi Okafor. Signed.
